UPDATED: Finidi George Resigns As Super Eagles Coach

Finidi George, the recently appointed head coach of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, has resigned from his position. This decision comes after a poor run of games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which included a 2-1 loss to South Africa and a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic. The team currently trails behind South Africa, Ghana, Egypt, and Benin Republic in the group standings with only three points from their first four matches.

Finidi George, a former Ajax star and member of Nigeria's "Golden Generation" that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, was unveiled as the 41st manager to handle the Super Eagles in May 2024. However, his tenure was marked by criticism and disappointment, particularly after the team failed to win either of their World Cup qualifying matches.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had previously announced its intention to hire a foreign technical director for the Super Eagles following an emergency meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on June 12, 2024. This decision likely contributed to Finidi George's resignation, as he faced increasing pressure to deliver positive results.

The NFF has yet to officially comment on Finidi George's resignation or confirm whether they will accept it. The resignation marks a significant development in the Super Eagles' preparations for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
